Katie Gets a Surprise and a Backbone

I may just be able to like Katie Holmes after all. After hearing about how her husband, Tommy Boy, was off promoting his new film on the day of her 30th birthday, I actually didn’t think poorly of him for it, as many people did. He’s an actor, he’s got a movie coming out next week, and he’s got a job to do. He did however, still make it known that he was thinking of his wife on her special day by sending a custom-made cake over to the theater, where she was of course playing in All My Sons, and there was plenty of cake and champagne for the entire cast, courtesy of Tom. Okay, so that’s actually kind of cute but apparently not cute enough to make Katie continue to bow down to his every command. In a recent interview she talked about how strong she was and how she’s not the doormat that everyone thinks she is. I was waiting for her to match her actions to her words and it seems as though now, she has done just that and actually placed herself before her husband. From BumpShack,

“Quite a pickle that Katie Holmes is in right now. The Golden Globes (in Los Angeles) are being held the same night as her last performance in the Broadway show All My Sons (in NYC), and hubby Tom Cruise is laughably nominated for a Globe. His brief comedic role in Tropic Thunder got him nominated and presented Katie with the issue.

Cruise is like the King of the Globes, their most desired participant for TV ratings, bigger even than Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The actor will be only two weeks into the launch of his movie, “Valkyrie, and the Globes show may be his final publicity pitch.

Ina Treciokas, Katie’s press rep, answers the question definitively. “Katie’s decided to stay and her do last show, Ina tells me. “She won’t be going with Tom to the Globes. The cast of ‘All My Sons’ has been like a family and they want to end it together.

Indeed, while some (ahem—Jeremy Piven) Hollywood types have been not totally devoted to their Broadway shows, Holmes has been a stalwart. She hasn’t missed a performance, as far as I know. She’s remained devoted to the play even though she’s got the smallest of the four leads.”

I am happy to see that Katie has seen that her last performance is really more important than a part in a stupid movie that her husband has. It may add to his promotional tour but he’s been doing enough of that himself that he doesn’t need his trophy wife on his arm as well. Good for Katie and I hope to see more things like this from her!

Is Katie as Strong as She Thinks?

I have a theory about Katie Holmes. I think that she probably once was a very strong young woman who had a very clear vision of what she wanted and how she was going to do that. Along with Michelle Williams, she was one of the more talented kids on the Creek and when she broke out onto the big screen as well, it seemed as though she wasn’t going to accept just once being ‘on that high school show.’ But then she met Tom Cruise, fell in love and really did seem to fade into the background of this person and life that was so much bigger than her. 

But Katie has recently done an interview with T: The New York Times Style Magazine and she wants to dispel people’s supposedly mistaken beliefs of her. From Daily Blabber,

“There’s a misperception about me that I just became this wallflower, this woman who doesn’t have any control of her life,” Kate, who’s only 29, says of herself since marrying Tom Cruise in 2006. “And that’s pretty wrong. From the very beginning, I’ve made choices in my life that have been very strong. ”

Kate does say that she was absolutely smitten with her hubby when they first met — and that she had all those silly dreams we all had while watching Top Gun in the ’80s.

“When I met Tom I was completely in love,” she gushed. “And, yes, I admired him growing up - he’s Tom Cruise! … When I met him, he was so warm and I thought, Wow! You can be a superstar and a human being. He made me feel so amazing.”

And as for the consistent talk that she’s Tom’s robot and under some kind of spell, Suri’s mom says she just can’t be bothered.

“I have too much to do,” Katie, who is currently starring on Broadway in All My Sons, said. “I’m a mom and an actress with a play to do every night. I can’t pay attention to all that noise.”

I do think that this whole Broadway gig that she’s found has really helped to give her more of a sense of self and really do something that has nothing to do about being a mother or wife, which was getting pretty boring to watch and is a large part of the wallflower image that she had gotten for herself. I think that Katie may not be completely under Tom’s alien spell but I do think that she has allowed him to lead her down paths that aren’t so great, such as that ever so weird religion. I like Katie Holmes but I would like her much better if she left that wacko hubby of hers.

More on Sad Katie

I’d be sad too if was married to Tom Cruise and unless she’s with her daughter, Katie Holmes generally looks sort of forlorn and unhappy. And poor little Suri almost always looks equally unhappy. The newest rumor that Katie is becoming ‘exhausted’ by Tom’s schedule is only one in a slew that this married couple has had long before they even tied the knot but one can’t help but think that there’s something here that just doesn’t sit quite right. And rumor after rumor, doesn’t it all start to ring true at some point? This from The National Enquirer via Celebitchy,

“You’ve got to give me a break, Tom.” That’s the plea an exhausted Katie Holmes made to her workaholic husband Tom Cruise - after she nearly collapsed while trying to keep up with his hectic schedule.

“All the racing around is killing her,” a close source told The Enquirer. “Katie just can’t keep this pace up much longer. Something has got to give - and Katie says Tom is going to have to lighten up on her.

“Of course he wants to see her and Suri, but she can’t keep making these coast-to-coast trips. She has to get some rest. Katie loves being in ‘All My Sons’ on Broadway. It’s been a great success and a terrific experience for her, but Tom doesn’t seem to understand that she needs a break sometimes. She can’t keep going and going like he expects her to.”

I don’t doubt that Katie is unhappy in her marriage. I think she loves being a mom and is probably scared to do anything to break up her family but whenever she’s seen with Tom these days, everything does seem a bit orchestrated. I don’t think however that this particular rumor is true. Whenever the family has been photographed together lately, it’s been in New York and so, I doubt that Tom has been making unreasonable demands regarding Katie flying out to LA, or complaining that they don’t see each other enough.
That being said, there’s definitely something wrong here. There’s no more jumping-on-the-couch kind of passion that we first saw with these two that could make you sort of almost like them. Maybe it’s the weird Scientology cloud that shrouds them or maybe the honeymoon really is just over but this does not appear to be one happy little family.

Is Mary-Kate Pregnant?

They may have once been cute but the Olsen twins these days are generally known for stirring up trouble. This time the attention is turned to Mary-Kate and she’s not in trouble…per se…but I suppose it’s all in how you view it. Celebrity Dirty Laundry has recently received a ‘hot tip’ that she may finally have something in her belly….a baby! This is what the website has to say about their tip,

“Last Friday, Mary-Kate Olsen, 20, linked to Heath Ledger at his death, was spotted with a female friend visiting the chic baby boutique Petit Tresor in West Hollywood. Her friend was teasing her about her belly and they spent more than forty five minutes browsing nursery furniture and Mary-Kate purchased burp cloths, bibs and t-shirts from Plain Mary emblazoned with the word “Babe” as well as a playmat and changing pad. In addition, she picked up a few layette items from.
If pregnant, the obvious father would probably be boyfriend Lapo Elkann, 31, known in the media as an Italian playboy, and the heir to the Fiat empire.”

I’m giving this one a big N-O. This story is simply not true. There aren’t even any credited sources, or even anonymous ones, she was simply ’spotted’ there. And I’m even doubting that as this baby boutique is notorious for spreading false stories about many different celebrities buying their baby clothes there, including Katie Holmes, Britney Spears, Jessica Alba, and Lisa Marie Presley. Add to that the fact that I’m sure that Mary-Kate Olsen is careful, careful when she’s gallavanting around town just so this exact thing doesn’t happen - I just don’t see her as the mothering type. So we shall move on but really, Mary-Kate, you should put some food in there.

Tom Makes More Weird Moves

Well Katie may have been able to kick the whole Cruise clan to the curb of her house but she definitely can’t stop them from getting heavily involved in her husband, Tom’s, career. Tom Cruise has once again turned to his sister, fellow Scientologist, to help manage his career. This isn’t the first time that Tommy Boy has wanted to keep his affairs within the family. It was right around the time that he and Katie started dating that she also managed his career and, as TMZ reports, it was not a good time in Tom’s career,

“Couches of the world, you’ve been forewarned.

Tom Cruise has once again enlisted sister Lee Anne Devette to help manage his career and steer the Cruise ship, reports OK!. This is not a positive development for Cruise; the last time she was involved, Tom started jumping up on couches and calling Matt Lauer glib.

“He needed someone to step in and take over. And Lee Anne stepped up to the plate,” says a source.”

Let’s not forget how he verbally attacked Brooke Shields for - GASP! - taking care of herself and her child! Anyways, it’s stuff like this that really has me feeling sorry for Katie Holmes. I think of how overwhelming her life must be, with a weirdo husband and overbearing in-laws. I’m glad that she take this gig on Broadway - it seems to have been really good for her to do something that she loves and step outside of the roles she’s been playing as Suri’s mom and Tom’s wife. She has also received rave reviews from audience members and fellow costars such as John Lithgow. Lycos caught a snippet of an interview with him where he couldn’t stop singing Katie’s praises,

“He adds, “Katie is lovely in the play, and she’s been such a sweetheart to work with. She has worked so hard - this is a tough, tough play.

“Katie is acting with thoroughbreds and she’s doing a wonderful job! She’s had to really push herself.”

John also praised Tom Cruise’s efforts in supporting his wife and making sure Suri got a taste of the excitement as well: “They’ve been around…a lot!”

Gosh darn it! If she would only leave that crazy husband of hers, I think I would really start to like Katie Holmes! Well I guess that’s a lot to put little Suri through just for my peace of mind. Alas, I suppose I’ll have to make peace with the fact that she really does love Tom.

A Bizarre Love Triangle

Are Hollywood stars really so petty? Okay, I’m slapping myself for asking the question as soon as it fell out of my mouth. But really, this goes way back to Grade 6 behavior and I would have expected more from stars that are generally thought to be so proper and classy. Everyone knows that Victoria Beckham and Katie Holmes just can’t decide whether they are going to be friends or not. But now apparently, Victoria has decided to really go for the gut and cozy up to one of Katie’s pals in an attempt to make her jealous. Okay, seriously? From The Pop Crunch Show,

“Victoria Beckham went out of her way to be photographed with Jennifer Lopez during New York Spring Fashion Week 2009 earlier this month because she desperately wants to irk on-again/off-again pal Katie Holmes, a new tabloid scoop claims.

Although both women were in the Big Apple, they refused to see each other “because of a falling out over Tom,” Star Magazine reports.

Posh has decided to befriend Jenn in a bid to make Katie jealous.

“Posh knows Katie is close with JLo.”

I don’t think this move to America has been very good for Posh. She seemed relatively normal, and even a little funny, when the Beckham’s first moved but she just seems to have gotten so much trashier and materialistic than she did even when she was across the pond. And really how does JLo feel about being put right smack-dab in the middle of that whole immature mess? I’m sure she’s busy enough with those two new babies that she doesn’t need to play into this crap. Stupid games by stupid people.

Katie’s Protesters

So by now many have heard about the protestors that showed up on Katie Holmes’ opening night of her new Broadway show All My Sons. The protestors lined up outside the theater and held ridiculous signs and chanted ridiculous things, hoping to free Katie from the evils of Scientology. Apparently, only Katie though - they don’t seem to be huge fans of Tom Cruise, who was also there that night, supporting his wife. Of course Katie and Tom acted as we all knew they would, smiling proudly and holding their heads high before scurrying home to place curses on them. From Reuters,

“Actress Katie Holmes won praise for her debut on Broadway on Thursday night, where she was cheered on by actor husband Tom Cruise and shouted at by anti-Scientology protesters outside the theater.

The drama started before the curtains went up in the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater with a group of about 20 protesters, some masked, chanting “Scientology is a cult” and “Free Katie”, according to the New York Daily News.

Inside Cruise, star of “Mission: Impossible” and one of the best known members of the Church of Scientology, was the main attraction, swarmed by fans and agreeing to pose for photos, overshadowing Dustin Hoffman who was also present.”

Yes, this show lived up to the high anticipation that preceeded it. These protesters however, really do look like they’re in a cult and it’s a wonder how they could ever think that people would take them seriously. Or that Katie would free herself from Tom’s clutches and run to join their clan. It takes all kinds of freaks to make the world go round. I’m just saying, if you’re going for your 15 minutes of fame, you might want to pretty yourself up a little.

I have heard though that Katie was amazing in her role from many sources and that the play in general is outstanding. With all the crap I say about them, I must admit that Katie does set herself apart in Hollywood. She’s always right on top of fashion trends and she always seems to be proving herself as someone other than who we thought she was. She does really seem like a great mom to little Suri and weird as it may seem to the rest of us, her marriage is happy. This is her moment and I think she has reason to be proud.

Tell us Something we Don’t Know

Everyone has been more than skeptical ever since TomKat hooked up and once they were married with a family, forget about it! The two were so wrapped up in each other that nothing else mattered and while at first the passion seemed kind of sweet, it quickly became something warped and twisted. Katie was all of a sudden nowhere to be seen, except for the occasional shot with Suri and Tom was so busy fighting the bad press all the time that things just seemed to continue to get weirder by the day.

So it really should come as no shock to anyone that now Katie’s friends have begun to be a bit fed up with all of it as well. This comes at a time when Katie is constantly rehearsing in New York for the opening of the show All My Sons. Now that she is out and about so often, the paparazzi are getting their fill that they have been missing all these many months. Add to that these stories of burned friends and the story gets that much more interesting. From the Gossip Girls,

“One ex-friend told press, “Katie and I were best friends until she met Tom. Then, overnight, we went from talking every day to nothing. She was so single-minded about her life with him that no one else mattered.”

Another source agreed, stating, “Katie never had a big group of girlfriends, but after Tom, she stopped calling them. It was amazing she could cut everyone off so fast — business associates, her hair and makeup team, as well as friends.”

So is this just a case of bitter friends who are envious of their good friend’s success? Or is Tom really more twisted than we had all actually thought? (which was already a lot!) Has Katie become a complete recluse? Or is the final stage of her Scientology brainwashing finally complete? Yes, yes, yes, and yes. She has completely isolated herself for the past two years and until this passion came over her to perform this play, we really hadn’t seen all that much of her. This gig seems to be going well for her and I hope that she stays on it. She has embraced the role, both in her new look and at rehearsals, according to other performers in the play and she just seems like a different Katie. Almost the one that I loved on Dawson’s Creek all those years ago.

Activists want to Save Katie

So I guess it’s not only fans and bloggers alike that are concerned about the welfare of Katie Holmes. It’s no secret that she has been looking and acting more like a Broadway actress while she continually rehearses for All My Sons opening soon in New York. This is a great opportunity not only for Katie to show the world that she’s more than just a teenage drama series actress but it will also be an opportunity for her to show that she’s got some balls. A group of anti-Scientology activists will be there, ready and waiting to save Katie from the evils of the mysterious religion. From the Gossip Girls,

“Reportedly, an Anti-Scientology activist group is planning to protest outside the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre when the show officially opens on October 16th.

A group spokesperson told press, “We aren’t looking to shut the play down, we don’t have the power to do that; we just want to prove a point. We want to draw attention to Scientology, and hopefully get Katie out of it before it’s too late.”

Oh what heroes these people are. Puh-leaze! I don’t think anyone except for those that are immersed in it truly understand Scientology but I’m not one to tout about how wonderful it is either. I also think it’s weird and creepy, and that the mere fact that no one seems to be allowed to fully understand it unless they become a true believer, does seem somewhat cult-like to me.

That being said, I do think that people should be allowed to believe in whatever they want without other people actually physically harrassing them about it. We all know that Katie’s only involved in Scientology because Tom Cruise is so passionate about it but who really cares what her motives are? The woman has enough problems what with the bad jeans, bad haircut, bad shoes, and psycho husband. We might want to leave her alone on this one.

Katie’s Got Some Moves of her Own

Just when everyone, myself included, had pegged Katie Holmes as backbone-less and someone who had been brainwashed by her husband, Tom Cruise, it seems that she may actually not be afraid to step up to the plate when it’s needed, after all. Or at least on some issues. While people were talking about Tom’s scientology obsession and whether or not Katie was pregnant, what we didn’t realize was that it was a full house over there. Tom’s mom, sister, and his sister’s kids have been living with him for quite some time. Katie musn’t have been too happy with that - and who would be? - because she has finally called the whole living situation off. We’ve all seen the pictures of their fabulous new house in The Hills but perhaps the best part of it all, for Katie at least, is that they will be living there alone with adorable Suri, Connor, and Isabella. From Celebitchy,

“When Katie and Tom recently moved into a $35 million home in Beverly Hills, Katie put her foot down and insisted that everyone — other than Suri and Tom’s two children with Nicole Kidman, Isabella, 15, and Connor, 13 — find another place to live. “It’s about time for Tom and Katie to live alone,” another pal adds. “They never have before.”

The adjustment may be difficult for Tom, 46. His mother, Mary Lee South, and three sisters have been a constant presence in his life since he divorced Nicole in 2001. All are Scientologists, and Mary Lee and sister Cass have lived with him at different points. “He’s very close with his sisters and his mother and he always welcomes his family into his house,” an insider says …“Cass and her sons have been an integral part of Tom’s life, and Cass helps take care of Tom’s children when he is away,” adds the insider.

But when Katie finally said enough is enough, “Tom agreed things needed to be different,” the family friend says. “He assured her that they would not be moving in with them.” Instead, Mary Lee and Cass will remain at a duplex apartment at the Scientology Centre on important Hollywood Boulevard, where the entire Cruise clan stayed while their new house was being renovated.”

Of course they’re staying at the Scientology Centre! I have a question, what’s wrong with getting a house of your own? Especially when your son or brother is freakin Tom Cruise! Nothing this family does surprises me. I had actually started to change my thinking about the Cruise clan when Tom appeared on Oprah and sent forth the picture of a regular guy living in his Colorado home. Something kept nagging me at the back of my mind telling me it was all PR and now I know it to be true. I’m just bothered by the fact that he never made mention of the fact that his extended family was living there with him. He pointed out Suri’s “office” and even made note of Katie’s cupcakes but nothing about his family. Not only is he keeping the truth from everyone but how does his family feel with not even a mention? Nice.
