Dannielynn is off to Greener Pastures

October 30th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Anna Nicole Smith, Larry Birkhead

I think there are very few celebrity children that I feel as bad for as I feel for Dannielynn Birkhead, daughter of Larry Birkhead and Anna Nicole Smith. Not only has she had two of the most turbulent first years of her life but this is a child who will grow up always being under the microscope and always having deep-seeded issues about who she is, where she came from, and the messed up life that her mom led. And I must say, I was really happy when it was proven in court that Birkhead was in fact her father. Out of all the dollar signs in people’s eyes, I just felt as though he was really genuine. But now, I think I may have been fooled. Not only has he done some of the weirdest stuff with his daughter, such as give her a pair of her mother’s lingerie, but he has been the first to tell the world exactly what they were doing.

The latest move that Larry has planned is an actual move…such as a relocation. Somewhere out of The Hills and the spotlight and hopefully somewhere that sweet Dannielynn can try to grow up normally and remember her mother in the shining light that all children should. I think is absolutely the right move for Larry to make but I can’t help but notice that he’s not trying to be discreet - again. When packing up the house that Anna Nicole Smith lived in, he invited the press over for an interview. From Celebitchy,

L&S: After Anna’s death, what made you decide to bring Dannielynn to Anna’s home
Larry: There were just tons and tons of memories. Anna’s reality show was taped here, and it’s the place she called home. After she passed, I just couldn’t bear to part with it.

L&S: So why are you selling it now?
Larry: You know, I always said I’d never sell, but the longer we’ve been here, the more I’ve realized it’s not built for children. We live over a canyon, and while the view’s great, there’s no backyard. I’ve bought Dannielynn every toy under the sun, but they can’t replace a yard. She doesn’t have a place to have her friends over to play.

L&S: You’ve kept an entire closet of Anna’s clothing, accessories and jewelry. Is that another way of preserving her memory for Dannielynn?
Larry: Yes. Every piece in there has a story. Someday, I hope to show them all to Dannielynn and tell her what event her mom wore them to and what they meant to her — from the casual T-shirts to the fancy dresses. I want her to understand how beautiful and glamorous her mom was.”

I love all of the sentiment that is behind this. What I don’t like is the fact that Larry had to take the last few memories of the mother of his child and splash them all over across the front pages of magazines and newspapers. This would have been a much sweeter thing to do if Larry had taken Dannielynn into the house and gone over the most precious and valuable memories of her mom. Once he sold it to the press, it just became another star trying to make another buck.

Larry Birkhead Buys Special Keepsake for Dannielynn

I was very happy when Larry Birkhead was proven to be the biological father of daughter, Dannielynn Hope Marshall Birkhead, who’s mother was of course, Anna Nicole Smith. There was something very underdog about him and there was a certain charm that just had me rooting for him. But now, I question some of his parenting tactics. While it’s nice to give children something to remember their parents by after they’re gone, I really have to wonder what Birkhead was thinking when he decided it was appropriate to buy some of Smith’s lingerie at an auction on Saturday. All to pass on to his daughter, of course. From US Magazine,

“Larry Birkhead paid nearly $3,000 at an auction Saturday for lingerie worn by late ex Anna Nicole Smith in a Playboy shoot.

Birkhead explained he paid $1,800 for a pink bustier and $1,000 for a white negligee because he wanted to give their 1-year-old daughter Dannielynn a keepsake of her mother.

“I have a lot of history I have to put together that she doesn’t really know about,” he told the Associated Press. “Playboy was such a big part of Anna’s career.

“You know, it’s not something I can show today, but something down the road,” he added. “It’s not going to be in any bedtime stories anytime soon.”

Birkhead was given sole custody of Dannielynn after Smith’s drug-induced death in February 2007. Dannielynn was named the sole heir to Smith’s estate.”

While I’m happy that he’s not hanging it up with all of her other toddler-wear, I wonder how she’ll feel about it even when she’s older? There’s just something so icky about the whole situation. Is he going to whip out those old mags too when Dannielynn starts to wonder about her mom? After all, “Playboy was such a big part of her life”. Showing pictures is obviously appropriate. Yuck!
